Second partners meeting in Lillhardal (Sweden) on 24-26 April 2015
All partners arrived to Harjadalens Culture Centre (HCC) in Lillhardal in the late evening of 23rd April. We had very nice dinner in HCC prepared by Flavia – one of the masters of HCC. Partners had a nice conversation about their first impressions from travel from Stockholm to the middle of Sweden, where Lillhardal village is located. Everybody was admired by wild nature of Sweden with its large forests, many lakes and few cars on the road.
During the first day of meeting we visited best practice example of Swedish partner – Asarna Skicenter in Asarna. It is the centre offering the large range of services: a restaurant with daily meals and a la carte, an outlet and sport shop, a camping site with cottages, training camps for schools and professionals as well as ski museum.
Also partners were driven to Remsgarden (Rems Yard). It is folk museum made in old wooden farm from 18th century. Almost each village in the region has its own “Hembygds-gard” (folk museum), but they are not very well promoted for tourists, although they are perfectly preserved by government.
Hanging Tapestry Museum in Overhogdal – great exhibition showing the history of tapestry almost the whole year round, meantime other touristic places are open only from midsummer till the middle of August, as it is usual for tourism in remote regions with highly seasonal conditions.
After this cognitive trip in Harjadalens surroundings we had the meeting of partnership. Coordinating organisation Education, Research & Consultancy Centre made presentation what is done so far by network and project budget balance. Estonian partner Loodi Manor Nature Centre presented evaluation results of kick-off meeting in Klaipeda.
In the evening we had dinner in Farsans Pub – the only working restaurant in Lillhardal.
The second day of meeting was fully dedicated for work on project documents and products. In the morning we started to present best practice examples of successful and sustainable tourism businesses in remote areas as well as SWOT analysis from tourism sector in our regions. Also we prepared for Think Tank event, which will take place in Sveg at the end of partners meeting. During break between presentations we had walking tour in Lillhardal with stories about village’s life by Flavia and Andreas, the owners of HCC. We also visited folk museum in Lillhardal, which was closed, but we got the key from one local resident. We wanted to visit the old church, but it was also closed, and key was not available.
The third day of partners meeting began from discussions about financial matters of project, travel documents and declaration of working hours. After coffee break we continued with tasks and deadlines till next meeting in Iceland. After lunch prepared by Flavia we went to Sveg to participate in Think Tank panel. The event was focused on discussion about vision how sustainable tourism in sparsely populated areas can be developed. Apart NordTourNet partners, representative from Harjadalens Business Department Mr. Thony Gustafsson and a lot of local people participated in discussion panel.
During meeting in Sweden partners experienced themselves the particularities of social and economical life of Harjadalens region as well as problems and opportunities for development of tourism there. From this point of view meeting in Lillhardal was extremely valuable. Undoubtedly, it brought added value into the project.

The third partners meeting in Neskaupstaður (East Iceland) on 25-27 August 2015
The first day of meeting was dedicated for visits of best practice examples and other places related to tourism, culture and creativity. The aim of day visits was to understand better social-economic and tourism situation in East Iceland.
Creative Centre in Stöðvarfjörður is the challenging initiative of young people to transform former fish factory into Creative Center in order to regenerate and sustain the community of small village – Stöðvarfjörður.
The fish factory in Stöðvarfjörður was closed in 2005 and village’s economy and population were decreased so that this settlement could wipe off map of East Iceland, if it doesn’t sustain itself. Stöðvarfjörður Creative Center will eventually house workshops, studio spaces, culture venue, café, and local products market. It will even retain some of its original purpose by supporting the local fishing industry. Spaces will provide a wide spectrum of creative options, from food, music to arts and crafts and encourage an influx of new people and ideas.
In this beautiful small village Stöðvarfjörður we also visited Petra’s Stone Collection – the private museum of minerals.
The lunch we had in Skriðuklaustur Cultural Centre in the valley of Fljótsdalur. It was the home of author Gunnar Gunnarsson and in 1939 was built and designed by German architect Fritz Höger. The house today is a museum for Gunnarsson.
After lunch we went to one of the Visiting Centers for the Vatnajökull National Park, which is at Skriðuklaustur. Here we made acquaintance with Visiting Center’s work and services, geographical territory covered by park and visited small museum about nature of park.
Slaughterhouse Culture Center in Egilsstadir offers all kinds of artistic experiences, lectures, workshops, performances, exhibitions and more. Center has a close connection to the local schools and regularly welcomes visitors of young age. It is interesting that Center is located in an old building, formerly a meat-processing plant.
After visit of Slaughterhouse Culture Center we experienced one attraction of locals and visitors. We hiked in Reyðarfjörður and visited one place from the book Fjarðabyggðaflakk – it is a family game made by the local hiking club. You gather stamps and sign guestbooks at 12 places in Fjarðabyggð and get a price if you get all stamps – the book tells a little story about each place. All the places as just a short walk from the road so it is easy to visit them.
In the evening we observed best practice example of Icelandic partner - Mjoeyri travel service in Eskifjörður. It is a small family business, owned and operated by the married couple Saevar Gudjonson and Berglind Ingvarsdottir. They provide locals and tourists with accommodation, offer various trips, events, golf, ice-climbing, kayaking, diving and much more. Also this couple runs Restaurant Randulffs-Seahouse with Maritime Museum, shark-meat (hákarl) and dried fish (harðfiskur), where we had dinner after long day of visits.
During the second day of meeting partners discussed, what they saw and noticed by visiting culture centers, visitors’ centers and best practice example during the first day of meeting. Then we also discussed Sweden meeting evaluation and presented our second best practice examples. We looked through SWOT analysis and decided to complement it constantly till the end of project with new insights as well as to add more statistical data and links to additional information.
In the evening we visited the second best practice example of Icelandic organization Austurbru – Meet the Locals. We had the dinner in the house of locals in Eskifjordur. Svanhvít and Agnar originally came to East Iceland from Heimaey island, which was very destroyed in 1973 because of volcano eruption. Many people had to leave their houses and move to other places in Iceland. Svanhvít and Agnar prepared for us traditional Icelandic dishes - plokkfiskur (fish stew) and the desert skyrkaka (Skyrcake), both of them were extremely delicious! Good food was complemented with interesting stories from Icelandic family's life. Svanhvít and Agnar have 6 children, the youngest one - son Tumi - had the dinner together with us. The head of family is fisherman, her wife is teacher in primary school. We liked this dinner very much, because we felt the spirit of Icelandic family and heard about their jobs, daily life, traditions and habits.
During the third day of meeting we gave an interview about project for Austurbrú PR manager. He uploaded audio record of this conversation in Austurbru website and Facebook. Later on we talked about financial and administrative matters of the project, tasks and deadlines till next project meeting in Estonia in 2016.
Partners filled in evaluation forms of meeting in Iceland and interim project evaluation.
Here you will find evaluation of meeting in Iceland and Interim project evaluation report.

The last partners meeting in Viljandi (Estonia) on 20-22 April 2016
The last meeting of NordTourNet project was hosted by our Estonian partner Loodi Manor Nature Center. Partnership stayed and meeting took place in a cozy homestead Männiku Forest Cottage, situated in remote area, in the middle of forest in Viljandimaa region. It can be also considered as NordTourNet best practice example, because homestead offers wide range of services for tourists and visitors, and it is continuously working for more than 10 years as sustainable business.
From morning of the first day meeting we have visited Tipu Nature School – nongovernmental organization, working in remote area of Soomaa National Park. Estonian partner has chosen Tipu Nature School as best practice example for our compendium as well as perfect example of experiential adult education. This school organizes various environmental educational events for children and adults – seminars, workshops, guided tours, summer camps.
After presentation of Tipu Nature School and conversation with project leader Dagmar, partnership was invited to observe Kopu Manor and listen to its history. It was cultural visit to see, how historical building is preserved and brought back to life in the smallest municipality of Estonia.
The lunch we had in vintage Rohelise Café – small vegetarian café in Viljandi, former pharmacy.
After lunch we continued historical-cultural tour in Viljandi. We have visited puppetry, The Kondas Centre of Naive Art, Viljandi Castle ruins, observed traditional handicraft items. This tour helped us to understand the advantages and weaknesses of the area as touristic destination (valuable observations for SWOT analysis).
The day was finished with dinner in Fellin café, which is in the competition of Best Café of Estonia in 2016.
Second day – the day in Tartu.
Barge Society – the 2nd best practice example of Estonian partner – is situated in Tartu. It is non-profit association building and restoring historical ships and providing on them educational trips by Tartu river. The type of tourism, which Barge Society provides, is entertainment integrated with nature education, cultural traditions and history, for the most part shipping history. Partnership observed the premises, where ships are constracting and restoring, experienced 3-hours guided tour on barge on Tartu river.
During the day in Tartu partners visited Tartu Centre of Creative Industries, Science Centre AHHAA and had the tour in city.
The dinner was in Estonian Traditional Music Centre in Viljandi– an example of successful restauration of old caving building and transforming it into modern culture center. After dinner partnership participated in musical event of Nordplus Music Network – Nordtrad.
The third day of meeting mainly was dedicated for project administrative matters: final amendments in Compendium of Best Practice Examples, SWOT analysis, dissemination issues, next deadlines, final report, future Nordplus Adult project NordTourNet-2, evaluation of meeting and final evaluation of project.
Coordinating organization ERCC presented dissemination event (public discussion) by using World Café method, which took place on 12th of April in Klaipėda.
The lunch was very exciting, because hosting institution invited us to the family house to try new service of Estonian partner taken over from Icelanders – Meet the Locals. We had home made food in family who owns strawberry plantation and summer café. The aim of this attraction is by having lunch or dinner in local family to get a better understanding of the lives of the locals.
During this day partners also visited Loodi Manor Nature Center, listened to stories of amazing storyteller, settled in old house in the forest, Piret Päär. At the end of the day partners had ceramic workshops. In the near future this route with Meet the Locals service, storyteller and ceramic workshop entertainments is planned by Loodi Manor Nature Center to be developed for tourists coming to explore and to get to know better the remote area of Southern Estonia, the locals’ life and culture.
Main findings of meeting in Estonia in term of adult education: the importance of participatory/experiential learning in adult education, multitasking by running small business in remote area, the course about time management for multitasking people in NordTourNet-2 project.
Here you will find evaluation of meeting in Estonia and Final project evaluation report.
